That’s great boatbum.
I use to try and do the same thing when I had my boat on the river.
There was a little boy about ¼ mile from shore that would stand on his porch
and jump up down every time I went down river with his arm going up and
down for me to pull the cord for the whistle.
One day his mother brought him down to the boat. I let him clime all over the boat
And pull the whistle

This is a burner I experimented with burning five gal of oil per hour.
The power was 15 PSI of water pressure and acted as the fuel pump as well.
I never used it as I was working on several other designs at the time.

Yes Rick the small end goes toward the top cylinder head.
Also I see you have a bent rod
This Co can straighten it, Chrome and grind it.

The Derr boiler I built was built to run at 1000 PSI
I hydro each grid to 2500 PSI then I sent it out to be Heat treated for stress releasing
Then re hydro to 2000+ for two days.
I ran the 1920 Stanley at 1000 LB and blue the water pumps and destroyed the

The question of running an engine at 1000PSI got me thinking.
Nergaard’s 20 HP piston valve block was cast in Ductile iron, I have cylinder heads and pistons and valve covers also cast in Ductile. Stanley cranks tend to have cracks under the rod journals, With new crank webs and journals and one of my Box frames I think the engine would hold up at 1000 PSI

The Reliable engine is about 2.5 by 3.5 X 2” stroke Small engine no more then 100 PSI.
The big piston valve engine I built for my 35 foot boat only ran at 300 PSI.
I don’t know of any casting set that will run at 1000 PSI
If I were to cast an engine for 1000 PSI I would use 85-55-06 Ductile iron castings and make my calculations accordingly.

The object of posting the video of the engine running was to show the reversing gear and how it was made. Both an inner and outer spiral and how the shaft can be rotated while the engine is running.
Any cam can be rotated to any degree of angle while it is running with modem hydraulics, electronics or pneumatics.

It shows the cam and how the shaft angle can be changed with very little movement as the engine is running.

You may want to read a book by L Francis Herreshoff about his brother
The Title is Capt Net Herreshoff the wizard of Bristol.
The book is mostly about the sailing ships and steam ships that Net built.
But there are sections in the book on his great steam engines and designs. Triple expansion and valve settings.
As Jim Crank said Net was one of the best Steam engineers in the era.

Doble Steam Cars by F.N.Walton.
I bought my copy back in 1971 for $8.50.
Thee best thing about it is Abner gives you all the Formula’s Gas pass area for your tubing windings, port area in the cylinder block, combustion area for how much fuel can be burn. Just about every Formula you need to design a boiler or engine.

No only tube windings I built were economizers and superheaters.
The only monotube pipe boilers I built were models. You can learn a lot from making models.
Estimated cost, tooling, spacing supports, burner volume.
I never could burn the maximum fuel that Doble formula said you could. Never a clean burn. 80% of it and I would get a very clean burn.

I found that the cost of castings at the Foundry is in putting the molds in the sand, not how many pieces are on the board.
I tend to put as many on the board as I can, cost wise it’s cheaper per piece.
