Rick,
Thanks again for the visit last week. I enjoyed the long talk we had.
I have decided to add a little of modern control to my Lyka.
However, I have also made it so I can remove it and revert to "manual".
The end result is a Dashboard with a control/gauge cluster.
A single cable connects it to the relay box for lights etc.
If I unplug the cluster, then the system r

Ken and Rick,
I am using the magnetic float units in my Water and Fuel tanks. They have a "plastic" float.
Since I am still investigating and speculating on the best way to do the boiler, and since I have
not even seen (other than pictures) the piping arrangement, I am thinking that the "sensor array"
will parallel the sight glass somehow and sit at the proper elevation

Thanks so much for the information.
I think I am getting closer.

Your reply mentions an article that Dave "attached" - do you happen to have the article itself?
The Tubes with reed switches and floating magnets are actually what I am using in the "feedwater" tank as well as the fuel tank on my Locomobile replica. There are commercial units with guages avail

How can I find out more about the sensor, is it available as a product?
Does someone have a picture of how it looks installed?
Thanks,

I WILL HAVE TO THINK A BIT ABOUT ADDING THE FINS.
35 years ago I was a buckskinner.
My daughter and I spent our summers in the mountains of Colorado,
living in tents, sleeping in furs, open fires for warmth.
When we went to a rendezvous, with 100 other "hippies with guns",
we had an "unwritten understanding" with other camps to keep modern technology

Thanks for the responses.
To address "legal" requirements:
In Colorado, "Steam" is not a recognized category for anything related to Automobiles or Transportation other than Locomotives and vehicles that run on "tracks". Boilers are not regulated in autos, the regulations specifically omit them.
There are some "Road-worthy Definitions" I can find

To my fellow Steamers,
I pose a few questions. I am mulling these over and have decided to ask others for opinions.
Background:
As you can see in my other recent thread, I am building a kit version of an 1899 Locomobile Model 1 (replica).
The manufacturer - Steam Traction World in the UK provides for a sight glass and pressure gauge.
This is in keeping with the original era concepts

Greetings,
I ran my engine on air today, the blog has multiple runs.
She started right up. I may have some minor clicks and clacks to trace down.
Hard to tell with air rather than steam.
Here is a link to my Youtube video since I cannot embed the video.

Hey Rick,
Sent you a PM.
Weather hit 60 today, but looks like it is dropping down into the 40's for the rest of the week.
I am going to spend the cold days getting things up to trying to run the engine on air.
I need to get some adapters and hose first.
More to come,

Hello Rick,
The main reason I open the garage door is because I have to.
I live in downtown Denver and do not have a separate building for my toys.
I have access to only 1/2 of a 2 car garage. My wife put her foot down about 8 years ago and
wanted her 1/2 of the garage back. After 40 years of not being able to park her car in it, I guess that was fair.
So in my 1/2, in order to move

Hello fellow Steamers,
It has been a while since I posted here. My Locomobile replica is coming along. I have completed the engine up to the point of putting it into the chassis, no external piping yet.
I have full details of the build so far on the blog:
https://poppapope-steamcar.blogspot.com/
But here are some pictures of the Engine.
Thanks for reading,

Hey Rick,
I just love it that someone is actually taking the time to look at my blog.
So missing a detail here and there is perfectly OK with me!!
I am flattered that my build may be up to the quality of those I see out on the websites.
I look at the cars on the sites of some of the clubs and read the details of the judging and levels of status and
wonder if my "replicar"

Hi Rick,
Thanks for reading the blog.
But read it again - before you look at the pictures.
To clear up the misconception, that is not the Exhaust Hat. It is the Filler inlet for the water tank.
The massive looking brass "gear" is a very nice CAP.
The inlet was damaged while at the powder coater, and the repair put it out of size for the cap.

So I received the main frame parts back from the powder coater.
I used the jack stands to support the assembly of the lower frame and then placed it on the chassis.

The first batch of chassis parts is back from the powder coater.
I chose not to do the painting on the large stuff in order to avoid the fumes.
These old lungs are coated enough as it is.
So here are the chassis parts, the assembly will happen in the next few days.
Keep an eye on my blog, it will have all the details, warts and all.

Rick,
You are certainly correct, one of the biggest reasons we play with steam is to fiddle with it as we go.
I intend to build the Lykamobile - as designed by STW. And see what I end up with. I certainly have a ways to go.
My pile of kits/pallet is sitting in Customs in Dallas. Arrived last night.
So now I am waiting to see what happens with import duties etc.

A Message to Rolly and all others.
As I sit here and wait for my first 13 Kits to show up from STW, I have been collecting resources for future consideration.
Some of the things I am pondering are the aspects of Boiler (and Water) Control, Operation and Preservation.
Perhaps, if any of you have a moment to share some of your knowledge and tutor an old student,
I might be able to gain s

Hi Rick,
Thanks for the response and encouragement. As I await my shipment, I am taking the time to study the build logs
of previous steamers and try and accumulate the supplies and additional tools I might need.
This is a picture of the pallet on the factory floor in the UK.

Hello -
First question of the build -
Steam Cylinder Oil - Where to get it? When I asked STW about the recommendations,
I was told - "Morris compound cylinder 1000 steam oil" - Does someone carry this in the US?
Thanks,
Jim

I am rather new to this area of interest, at least at the size most of you are presently working in.
