The side lamps were Neverout and they were kerosene. There are many available today on eBay. The side lamps are the ones with the bail top handle. They used the same lamp for a tail light too. The curved dash Olds used them too.

I got my slide valve castings OK and they machined up real nicely. Our Stanley Mt. Wagon will make it to Ormond Beach yet. That is if there is any beach left after the last storm. Check out the attachment.

Dear Rolly, One of our Forum readers had a pair of 30 hp side valve castings that he is dropping into the mail for me. Thank you friend.. I have scratch machined slide valves and pistons in the past for the Stanley engines. The pistons are no sweat. The slide valves take a bit more care to make from bar stock. My problem is getting the slide valves as light as what Stanley did and still kee

I have deep rust pits in my 30 hp Stanley slide valves. The rust pits are bad enough that they have started to make my slide valves chatter. The pits are too deep to machine out. My cylinder block is still clean but the slide valves need welding up. I do not want to cast iron weld them for fear of new cracks and messing up the quality of cast iron. How about brazing the pits level with brass

Dear Jim, History is good because history is also full of failures. Howard Hughes had many failures and we should learn from other's failures by not making the same mistake again.

There is so much Hughes steam car history that was uncovered in this thread that I hope somehow that it can be saved in today's "information age". If it wasn't for the eBay posting of the Hughes' photos to bring this thread up, in another 10 years, the Hughes' steam car history would have been almost completely lost. It might still be. It was a really advanced automobile for it's era!

Dear Jim, Do you first let it soak and then flush it through the system? Or there isn't any soaking time and you flush it through the coils? Could it work in Stanley fire tube boilers? The Condensing Stanley fire tube boilers get crudded up from the oil build up on the lower tube sheet and then get a mud burn. I know of two people right now that could really use something to flush the steam

In my above post, it was questioned about the mpg that SUVs now get. The mileage has improved recently with computerized carburation and ignition. For information on my 2004 GMC Yukon with the 5300 ltr. engine go to It says this about the GMC Yukon: "The popular 5.3-liter V8 offers impressive acceleration performance. Called the 5300 Vortec, it's rated at 295 horsepower and 330 pounds

Dear Peter Brow, An energy conversion is where energy stored in one form is transfereed into another form. In an example: From fossel fuel to stored steam pressure is an energy conversion. Sunlight into charging batteries is an energy conversion. Everytime one of these conversions is made, there is a cost of doing business, a loss of energy. The Stanley has two of these conversions, fossel

Dear Peter, Harry is on the right track with the progress that is being made on a modern steam car. The 5 stages of heat recovery will make a big difference. Hopefully this research will make the steam car a reality again in our life times. Presently for a test of puting steam against the I.C. car for mileage, I have been very successful in matching my test cars. I have matched both the steam

Tonights headlines..."Congestion City: Traffic Jams just keep spreading". The news article lists that "in 2003 there were 2.3 billion gallons of fuel wasted by the cars' running engines while they were in traffic jams". For the new people in steam, I want them to be aware that when a steam car is stopped for any reason, once the steam has reached it's cut off pressure, no mo

When I am touring with other vintage cars, howling gets on my nerves so I turn my main burner valve down just enough to stop the howling. When real performance is again needed for high speed or climbing hills, then it is back on to full main valve fuel flow with the howl again present. I can prevent the howling with changing to smaller main fuel jets, but I get a kick out of the snappy preforma
