Jim: my penchant is this I believe that it is important to continuously attempt new ideas and combinations of concepts. It is vital to challenge orthodoxy. Garage inventors and their "steam thingys" are the only hope for the existence of this hobby, if we are going to have more than just museum pieces. Another way of making a stream-hybrid would be to have the steam motor drive a heavy flywheel and have a hydraulic system for the drive. There is a company in England using a flywheel hybrid to power a light rail vehicle. I just found a nice size Lava Rock that was the size of a dinner plate, sitting in my wife's flower garden. Here in Idaho, Lava rock is easy to come by. Doug Nampa Idaho.by Doug-Ji - SteamStuff

Several years ago with my first monotube steam generator, I used a piece of Lava Rock for a flame deflector. I figure a thousand degrees isn't going to affect it. Lava melts at about 2100 degrees Fby Doug-Ji - SteamStuff

Low ambient temperature is one of the reasons I made a preheating coil on mine. I have heard that cold propane doesn't like to burn as well.by Doug-Ji - SteamStuff

I found some easy directions on the internet for coiling copper tube without "kinking" crushing it. http://www.instructables.com/id/How-to-Bend-Copper-Pipe-and-Tubing-without-Crushin/ although I would suggest using sugar instead of salt I used it to make the propane preheating system on the burner I am working on. I coiled 4 feet of quarter inch tube and placed it in a 2 inch piby Doug-Ji - SteamStuff

Finished Version One of the Simplicator Propane Burner with preheater. Main Casing is a 2 Inch diameter piece of threaded conduit. Preheater coil is inside.by Doug-Ji - SteamStuff
