Another devil's advocate question would be, what it is worth to hobby steam through out the world, if someone was to pay someone like George Nuts to design a genetic Lamont system that offered both ready made and plans like you see with Bechman and/or Reliable(not sure about ready made) that offers 5hp,10hp,20hp,50hp and 200hp boiler in 200psi/600psi/maybe higher.(And provision for gas,liquid,andby Arnold Walker - SteamStuff

On the European side I have seen the same with Preston steam products in Canterbury,England as with Bechman on the price for the stuff....The brits are asking 2 and 3 times what the club asks for a Stanley.by Arnold Walker - SteamStuff

Anyone know of or used turbine oil in piston steam, to know if you could have any better luck with critical or ? pressure piston steam with coking of tubes etc. Many of the model gas turbines out there don't use pressure lube so you mixing oil in like the Victorian piston guys as well. Still reworking both 7.5hp (for turbo compounding simple 34DL) and 25hp (turbocompounding simple 10hp steamboaby Arnold Walker - SteamStuff

Another engine came to mind on the club racing stuff...someone gets Harry's cyclone engine and fixes it well enough to run against the mega dollar Mercedes at Indy or one of the other Sports Car of America events.So he would know what the Club thinks is the right way to do a Cyclone.Instead of just talking about it .by Arnold Walker - SteamStuff

I forgot one other detail at the club races, automatic transmission are not allowed at much of any Sport car club of America races.So in my mercedes uses the OEM 4 speed manual. At risk of playing the devil's advocate ,Let suppose that you where designing a Mercedes 240D using either a stanley or a Reliable steam engine(turbine guy is always looking at turbo-ing in compound fashion off a simple for at least the same horsepower as the piston. Looking at ad it looked like what is old is new for the new view on biomass,to the point that I wonder what he thought Walker family in East texas were doing with 4 or 5 100hp case traction engines running farms, saw mills,rural shops,even the logging(they don't have anything heavy enough to move 3000-6000 tons a day to the mill....industrial trains that were wood fire were used on track that wereby Arnold Walker - SteamStuff

At this point,I am running two water pumps one OEM on the diesel with radiator replaced by what steamers would call a hot tank with a vacuum jet on the evaporator just before goes into the steam separator, you guys have been talking about. This holds the coolant temp down to something the diesel can live with(on warmup the evaporator will pull a 22in vaccum in the hot tank). An electric water pby Arnold Walker - SteamStuff

Had something of the same feeling when Gearing DD's(WWII destoryers stilling running in Viet Nam) were running 36knot flank on sea trails in 6ft white caps.That thing sound like an exec. jet cruising out thru there. My bad on the address...I was so used to Woodson having website references right there ,that forgot this site doesn't. www.steamboating.org which is the International steamboating society....he was also building a launch so that might have been water tank. Pressure on the auto water pump is good for 100psi,if one could do the machine work around the gland area that pressure could be increased.And I suppose Nuts could detail on what that gland work Teal(? if I remember correctly the guys name that worked up the pump) did, for those in doubt about that. There is a piece on the monotube pattern that the club brits are running in International steam society.The the pattern is the Pisces II that set the class B steam record at 104mph. They are using Proton compiled basic that looks something like the text document below.Which for free and written by Anderson. To make it even more freaky,if you are running a pressure firebox,that temperature would surge when you cut the blower and and the reverse when you first start the blower again.Agree with Jim on everything else ,just pointing how hard control by temperature was.by Arnold Walker - SteamStuff

Not sure of what you are getting at, but big ships like the Titanic had something like a 100 boilers and they would rotate according to the steam demand needed...so that every boiler was running at max. efficiency when it was on line. And you ended up using less coal to get that pound of steam.(except in their cases it was tons of steam) They also have reserve boiler so you could be working on oneby Arnold Walker - SteamStuff

I also a used heater fan housing off a junk car,after figured out the electric leaf blower was a little bit of overkill on 10 horse wood chip fired monotube(was gasifiering and collecting the ash like the 10Megwatt boilers did at the sawmills) . My steam Garden tractor ran but the controls were a pain to line out.The mower blades were louder than the blowers ,so whatever works for you.by Arnold Walker - SteamStuff

Model jet guys airstarted there jet with a hair blowdryer on like 5hp jetengine,on out to around 25hp. airstart with electric leafblower... Then the airstart on the helicopter at the hospital is about 40+hp for air ambulance.All are loud to some degree......all are radial inflow/centrifugal blowers.The vaccuum cleaner has a pretty high pressure radial flow because blade tips are covered like a jetby Arnold Walker - SteamStuff

I just hope piston guys don't throw up your hands and surrender, before the bottoming cycle guys get thier stuff together on turbo compound....if you are going to fight the fight in tech development simple with turbine, works better for us to compound.If done right ...it will be all those extra stages the Utility company is beating you with on thier turbines.by Arnold Walker - SteamStuff

In a logical world the Gigawatt plants would be better with scale....in a political world the government will throw enough wrenches in the works.That even half the efficiency might be an improvement . It might also be added that on the battery car that a home steamplant using many of the ideas displayed in the paper could be used to recharge the batteries and make greater use of the biomass etc. that is at the house.If so a city plant that is fueled by natural gas and supplied with solids found in the yard and garden that is chipped and shreded waste as well might be a good thing...A better useby Arnold Walker - SteamStuff

Have yet to get all the bugs out .....but my 240D should have the same power and performance as the 300SD.Running turbocompound (combined cycle 40hp diesel/100hp turbine).And getting almost double the fuel economy at the same time....it is going to take big boy state of the art steam to pull that one off. Nice,some of brits actually have mono tube programming language and ecu that they literally build and program for them things.Can't remember the names,but is pretty popular among the hobbists.All are fast enough that you have to see them to believe how fast they run....by Arnold Walker - SteamStuff

You look at some of the burners used by steamers like Doble in automobiles and you will see that they were building jet engines before there were jets...sort of like happened with the 32 cams the steamers used before there was even a internal combustion engine.by Arnold Walker - SteamStuff

You got it pretty much right on turbines ,even add vanes and all matter of thing to reduce restriction from turbolences. Look at turboshafts they even balloon out the exhaust pipe to reduce restriction....That stack would make one heck of a balloon exhaust pipe on a ship.... Looks like I am not the only person tinkering with a Mercedes donor cars,one possible way is to use a hydraulic pump and motor to get that speed match....as to reverse that would depend on the steam engine as to hydraulic reversing.Tractor pto hydraulic pump runs in speed range of most victorian steam engines.And Mercedes runs live axles so everything can be rigid mounted in place And /or a subfrby Arnold Walker - SteamStuff

In fairness most piston steam are running too high pressure ,but low pressure turbines can use them when they are running steam locomotive style pressures....maybe even to the point that the old locomotives did in fact use them. One of my combined cycle guys was wanting to turbo charge a diesel at tractor pull boost pressures(200 psi).And steam looks like good way of intercooling 500+ F. intakeby Arnold Walker - SteamStuff

You see the same problem folks with ordering concrete mixer or electric generator.... They will be puzzled because the exact same item has a rating for electric motor,another rating for gas(often two diferent ratings if they got propane /Natural gas version) and still another for diesel.
