Well since this is the non-technical section I figured Id start a sort of fishing diary.
I build my own crab traps, so its sort of constructive thing.
The design I use, was tought to me by my dad and brother when I was around 10 years old. If any forum members are interested in the design, I will e-mail plans thru e-mail correspondence.
I have cought both blue crab and stone crab, with these traps for many years. I build the traps from memory, and they are compliant to all State of Florida reg's. Im located in south Fl, at the southern end of Miami.
Im running a 14ft Carolina Skiff with a 20hp 4stroke Honda outboard motor. Ive spent alot of time getting this boat ready. I have settled with an 8pitch by 9-1/4in 4 blade propeller. Since I like to load the boat with the max capacity weight of 850lbs, this prop will get the boat on a plane and travel at approx 17mph. Ive messed around with this all last year, the performance of the boat is relatively consistant, I comfortable with the arrangement. Its not un-common for me to travel 9 miles offshore with others in the boat.
I will update this sort of diary, from time to time, sharing pictures of any good catches.
For now, here is a picture of the trap, and the area that I fish

the first picture is just for fun. And, yes that was a lizard on the backside of the trap.
Im deep frying some BonnetHead Shark that we caught last weekend, tonight. I did soak the fillets in lemon pulp and juice,made from my vegetable juicer. Also milk and non-salted crab-boil extract was added. I use only one, whole lemon, per 2 fillets. This really helps to bring out a clean flavor. But I do gut them a little, right away when they are cought, its called bleeding. After that you loop them in a stringer and let um swim around for a while. Put them on ice right away, once you take them back out of the water.
If you do these things, the shark meat comes out as a really good tasting fish, broiled, grilled or deep fried.
These sharks[the BonnetHead] rarely get to 3ft in length. The ones I cought were about 28in to 30in long.
The second picture is one of the bag of fillets, that im get'n ready to bread and toss in the deep fryer.

Here's what they looked like(shark nuggets) when they came out of the deep fryer. They taste excellent, slight hint of lemon flavor.
Also, I have a totally awesome quiche (egg-pie) recipe. Its great for breakfast brunches, its plain with chedder(but I like to add some sorronto peppers, just one, sliced and de-seeded). Anyhow my wife is working late tonight, she demanded that I make one for dinner for her. So I will make two.(one for me tomorrow)

Today at work things are lite,
So figured id post the pics of the hydrofoil that I mounted on my outboard.
I went thru about 5 different propellers, never quite got the performance that I wanted. I know that the hydrofoil causes some lift and levels the boat out like a trim tab. Since this boat is so small there are no trim tabs.
Also ive found that some the propellers that did not work that well work alot better using the hydrofoil.
The first 2 pictures are of the hydrofoil, the 3rd shows the bolts thru the transom holding the engine. I did this because I was worried the lift the hydrofoil causes, could make the engine fall off. The hand bolts are not sufficient in my opinion.
Would really like to get out there on the water this weekend, but the water is still too rough from hurricane Ike. Most likely will drive down to the keys to around mile marker 70 or 60. Theres some good bridges down there to fish from, and my wife and I looking for some distraction. Its alot of fun, if I catch anything worth looking at will post a picture of the catch.

Hi all,
We caught 3 snappers, 2 grey, and a mangrove. I was hoping to fill the cooler with a dozen or so, as weve done before. They were all legal so we kept them. They turned out really nice in the fish fry. Everytime we have a marginal catch, I fillet them and freeze um. So this time, there was enough to deep-fry, for a fish-fry. Cooked up some tater-tots in the oven, and they turned out great.
The first pic, is of the snappers under the ice. The 2nd pick is of the snappers themselves. The third pick shows my smoker and a fresh load of hickory from tennessee.
Although, I need some Jack-fish,(amberjack) to run the smoker, well get some, soon enough, also I smoke salmon, bought from the wholesale club, using an Teriyaki-seasame marinade, really comes out nice, in the smoker.
Well see what comes up, the next copula catches, with regard to the amberjack.
Although we were hoping to fish the long-key bridge MM 63.5 or so. It was under construction,(there adding fishing piers), so we went down to the southern end of the 7 mile bridge, there's a nice park there on a beach with restrooms on the oceanside. The gulfside has a sweet boat ramp for the Skiff. Was not expecting to find such a nice spot. It pays to explore a little.
So anyway,
We surf fished, off of, the beach there, nailed the three snapper there within forty minutes, then nothing bit until we left at 1 AM, we arrived around 7:30pm, just the way it goes I guess.
I cant wait to put the boat in down there, on a weekend, maybe run some stone crab traps, to soak for about 4 days, seasons comming up. You can run 5 stone-crab, and 5 blue-crab traps, with a recreational saltwater fishing license.

Unfortunatly, our frozen shrimp bait wasnt so good(usually is from that place), so we got skunked for the most part. Although we did catch a BonnetHead shark(there small not usually over 3 feet long), most trips we take 2 of these. I usually will fillet then marinade them, and make the shark nuggets, that we deep-fry.(like you can see at the top of the posting in my pic attachments)[yes I do bleed them out when cought]
This time we only got one, so I decided to do something different. Ive smoked these shark before and the meat comes out tasting real sweet, it is a way different taste, than you will get from just about any other smoked fish, very sweet tasting.
With that in mind, I created a different marinade using my 'Juice Man' vegetable juice machine. I always use 1 whole lemon per shark(2 fillet's) this time I added 1 and a half green bell pepers, some serrano(sp?) peppers from a plant I have on the back porch, pear nectar, soy sauce, but with no milk this time.
I have attached some pictures. These fillets will come off of the smoker about an hour from now, theve been on for an hour. Ive wrapped 6 ears of corn in tinfoil placed on the grate below the shark fillets, to protect them instead of using the water-pan.

Ok,

I figure the whole thing is like 15 calories : ) Anyway its very filling, the taste is unique and excellent as I predicted(also the taste came out sweet-spicy). Very filling. Theres enough from a single 29in bonnetHead shark to feed 5 people no problem, with the corn.
The 6 ears of corn came out perfect as well. There was nothing added, during smoking, or after, such as butter, or salt(for the corn) or anytype of sauce for the fish/shark, although, the shark was put on the smoker directly, out of the marinade pan, w/no rinse.(I marinaded for 24hrs in the fridge)
In attachment (e) you can see that the temp is quite low for the smoking process, I can place my hand on the smoker, at anytime, for the whole 2 hours,
without getting burned, it just feels very warm.
In attachment (f) you can see what the smoked fish/shark looked like after 2 hours, just before it was taken off of the smoker. As I mentioned before, smoking the shark causes it to have a very different taste than grilling or deep-frying. I feel cooked on the smoker the shark has the very best taste as its still warm from smoking. As it cools it becomes less mild and even more sweet. I feel that the marinade worked well. I did not skin the fillets, they were placed skin side down.

Figured id share some eye-candy with you all.
I am authorized to show these picture's, as I am an officer-of-the-company, VP to be exact. Its from my day-job, today, as chief/process engineer. Was doing a once for 5 year overhaul, replacing o-rings, etc.
These parts are over 40 yo, an have a fit of .00042

Here's a picture of me today at work, this room has five lathes and two milling machines, although three of the lathes are dedicated purpose. We build those with the other machines in the room.

Hi All,
Well, we finally made it down to Criag Key to go shrimping, last night. We could only stay for about 3 hours, and the tide was not running that strong, since it was not very close to the full moon.
All and all, we did okay, about 5 lbs head on Key West Pink Shrimp. We may try again this coming full moon. Its not uncommon to get 'way' more shrimp when there running strong. But these are good quality, and different from the brown or white shrimp that you get more north, around Card Sound.
Here's some pictures-
