I had to photograph this lovely steamer last weekend. The owner was famous for another steam powered vehicle ... anyone want to guess?

Beautiful boat...who is it?

I tried to figure it out at no avail. Also, where is it?

It was owned by Ephraim Shay, of Shay locomotive fame. He invented the locomotive in Cadillac, MI and eventually retired to Harbor Springs. It currently resides next to his home which was built out of boiler plate. I'll dig up some photos.

What an amazing man. The loco designed for a particular job is unlike anything else, the boat and the house unique. I wonder if the steel house is noisy when it rains - but how good to see it preserved.

Cool photos, and everything is so unique! Mr. Shay had one heck of a creative mind.

Here's a link to some photos of a Shay locomotive in Cadillac, Michigan -- very near to where the first Shay was built and operated.

About 50 years ago I looked at that boat somewhere near Traverse City MI. I was drawn to it not only for its svelte appearance but also the rusty patina. I'm not sure if it was in the same place in 1970, but I still like it.
Edit, it was on the shore near the south end of the Mackinac bridge!
