Hey Rick,

Sent you a PM.

Weather hit 60 today, but looks like it is dropping down into the 40's for the rest of the week.

I am going to spend the cold days getting things up to trying to run the engine on air.
I need to get some adapters and hose first.

More to come,

Jim

Greetings,

I ran my engine on air today, the blog has multiple runs.

She started right up. I may have some minor clicks and clacks to trace down.
Hard to tell with air rather than steam.

Here is a link to my Youtube video since I cannot embed the video.
Running on air video
Here is my channel:
Hilltop Steamworks Channel

I am using a small compressor with only a 2+ gallon tank. I started running at 60 PSI, that only
lasted about 30 seconds before running down. Then I switched to running at only 25-30 PSI.
This gave me a minute.

Very happy that the engine started right up and reversed cleanly. I did see a small stutter going
from reverse back to forward, but I think that under normal conditions you would not slam the change
under full steam as we have a direct chain drive and no seat belts.

More testing and tweaks to come.

Read my blog.

Regards to all.

Lika, I have a series 1 lika by Model works this is the company before it became STW. The series 2 has some changes from the series 1. Then in 2012 it was in an accident which bent the frame, at that time I decided to stretch the frame 20" to make it a four seater. Over the years it went thru many changes to improve it drivable. The list is long on the changes.

Thanks Jim Trotta for presenting your beautiful car to Jim Pope. I fondly recall your picture and article(s) in the Bulletin. Happy steaming and hope to see you on a tour real soon.

Kind regards,
Rick

Hello Jim and Rick,

I guess it is about time to update on the progress.
Not much I am afraid. Steam Traction World (STW) is behind in production of kits.

The good news is that they are communicating with us on the status of production,
so I am not worried about my investment. I recently discussed the situation with the GM (Dean) and
he has let me know that backlog is starting to move. But like a lot of other industries and companies,
the last couple of years has been tough.

While waiting I have been involved in some side projects on the Lyka. The electrical system has been revamped
and lighting controls installed. I covered some of this in another thread where I discussed whether I should upgrade
the technology used. I have also investigated some the features of the body side panels, like the use of louvers and trim.

Most of this will be covered in my Blog soon.

In the meantime - Winter is arriving, nights are getting colder, days too.

SO - Here are some pics I took this morning as I pushed the chassis out and cleaned up the work area.
I do not think I will get much more to post until the kits re-appear - I am promised that all the remaining
pieces and parts (incl boiler/burner/and pipes) will be complete around year end. So it will be spring before
I can really dive back into the build as my garage is un-heated.

Thanks for reading -

Beautiful work! I'm impressed. 2 big batteries so I'm guessing the boiler is gun fired.
Have a great day

Thanks Steve,

The burner is a Reillo 40 G10. It actually runs at 220 (gotta love the UK!) there is an inverter in between the batteries and the burner. The output range is up to 120 KW (409456.99 BTU/h).

All will become clearer when the shipments actually occur.

In the meantime, I guess I can "sort screws" - which is what I tell my wife when I go to the basement and hang out in my indoor shop.

Regards to all.

Jim

The original car had electronics on the dash board it worked but had some problems. I could detail them but since you don't have it it doesn't matter. It looks like on the series 2 they dumbed down the electronics. Now the burner most guys including myself replaced the 220 volt burner, removed the inverter and used a Wayne or Beckett 12 volt DC burner this made the system more reliable. Also the pressure switch that controlled the burner was replaced because of the dead band was to large the new pressure had a adjustable dead band. The diaphragm on the original was a rubber material with micro switch which burnt thru on mine so it was replaced with a commercial industrial type. I stopped by Grier house in North Carolina to look at his car on my way to Florida, since I take it to Florida for the winter we had the opportunity to compare cars and I made some recommendations to his car. We have a Lika Facebook group you may want to join. I need your email address or you can search FB for Likamobile steam car.
That's it for now

Springtime in the Rockies.

The good folks at Steam Traction World(STW) have been getting the backlog taken care of in recent months, and are
setting up a shipment to me in the very near future.

There have been recent updates in the owers groups on FB, and last week STW posted more pictures of
the supplies in the "boiler department".

I have spent the last couple of months working on incidentals like getting some gauges calibrated and also
finishing up the wire harness for stop/running/lic plate lights in the rear of the chassis. I am anticipating that it
will be easier to talk the Colo State Patrol into a VIN registration if I address a few things in advance.

Here are some of the pictures sent to me by STW:

Hi Jim,

I found your group about a month ago - Joined as Poppapope.

( I also talk to Grier a lot, so we are in the same community)

Steam Traction World has tested my patience a bit, but recently they created a new FB page just for production
updates. I hope to be running by sometime this summer. Still too cold to do much here in Denver, so I am just
getting into trouble by thinking of things to tweak.

Like a lighting setup.

Looks can be deceiving - no boiler, no pipes.
no sides, no steam.

June 6

Lots of action, just not everything I was hoping for. I queried STW on the status with the admonition that if the boiler was not going to be completed by June 1, then I wanted all the body panels so I had something to work on.

The body panels showed up a week later.

Full details in my blog:

[poppapope-steamcar.blogspot.com]

I have finished the most of front details, next is the rear deck and panels.

Making progress one way or another. The panels will keep you busy.

Wondering what is holding up the boiler. I believe I saw pictures of a firetube boiler slated to be yours, maybe not.

Here is a thought...perhaps another boiler choice (Ofeldt, my car's boiler)?
