1908 Stanley hand brake

Hi folks,

We have a new member who has a 1908 Stanley that lacks a hand brake. He would either like to make or buy one. Unfortunately, he doesn't have pictures of the hand brake nor know anyone who has one to sell. Can anyone out there help?

Regards,

Ken

It because it did’nt have one.
It should have two brake pedals next to each other. The right hand pedal has a latching bar that when you put the heal of your foot down
will lock the brake as an emergency
Mark Herman may have some parts from a later model he could use.

What year did they add the 2 pedals? Mid 1908 maybe? The 1908 EX at Auburn Heights I was out for a drive in this past weekend only has one pedal and it has the spring loaded latch you use your heal on to latch. No hand brake, no parking brake. Just one pedal that can be locked.

The EX at Auburn Heights is not an original car. It’s built up from several cars, even some 09 parts.
In 1906 late, the external brake drums were added to Stanley rearend along with the lock up latch. If you look at the 1907 Stanley rocket photos at Ormond Beach it had external brake drums along with a lot of other Stanley cars there. To have a car at Ormond Beach in January 07 it had to be built in 06.
The earliest external brake hardware on the side of the car I have seen has been on a Stanley is the 1908 model Z mountain wagon trucks. I have never seen it used on a Stanley original car.
Mark I believe has patterns for making this hardware. He has restored some beautiful Mountain Wagons and has made about ever part ever used on a Stanley.

Hear are a few drawing of how I built the emergency brake locking hardware.
My 1906 did not have this hardware, but I added outside brakes drums and copied the hardware from a 1907 car.
I also added a brake light and brake switch.

Hi Rolly,

I just noticed that the "Thank You" note that I thought I had posted wasn't showing up! Maybe I did the wrong mouse click. Thanks very much for the info, I passed it on to the right party.

Ken

Hi Ken
I found some other cars that Mark used the out side brake handle on, both were car of Brent Campbell’s.. One was on Big Red as Brent called her and the other was on the
Ray Stanley recreation.

Hi Rolly,

Those are pretty neat. It makes them look a bit more antique.
