Steve Baldock Model R Stanley’s.

Steve Baldock passed away on the 1st of November 2018
Shortly after completing the recreation of two Model R Stanley’s.
These are some photos of the Model-R Steve built from scratch.
He followed my work on my building my EX and E-mailed me often.
He did complete 3D cad drawings of every part.
Instead of castings most of the parts were machined in steel on a CNC Bridgeport Mill pre 1985 He advised me programs on how to go from Cad drawing to G code and then edit the G code to match my machine.

Steve was a very clever chap and far too young to pass away. He was the technical man behind the Likamobile - the kit for a modern representation of the Locomobile/Stanley. He came to try my Model H, thinking at that time to make a kit for replicas of the H. I persuaded him against that and convinced Steve that perhaps offering a steam hot rod to chaps who were in general constructors of model steam locos was not a great idea. After the Likamobile business closed he went on to build the two Model Rs which were very accurate recreations of the original and magnificent.

As you suggested on another thread Rolly building the real thing correctly is financially the best way to go. I would say though that there is room for those who are more interested in the technical development of steam but perhaps not to confuse the issue by building the vehicle as a replica of the genuine article.

Yes Mike rebuilding a Stanley, White or Doble I prefer to see them rebuilt or in Steve case built to the original as possible, I would not like to see a Stanley or White boiler or generator installed in a Doble or the other way around.

You sold your H pretty close to original and was building your own version of a car for your generator.

Very few Stanley, White or Doble are as original. Many now have hydraulic brakes. Even Steve’s has front Disk brakes. My own EX as a 06 did not have outside drum brakes, I put them on any way as they were made available in 07. Also in the photo of Steve’s car if your astute can recognize a reflex gauge on top of the boiler. Stanley never used a reflex gauge, but there are a lot out there that do. Other problems you can get into with homemade pressure vessels in a car in the US is the boiler code laws and registration. States like NY and RI can inspect any pressure vessels anywhere. Non code boilers have to be tested at 300% and have pressure rated ASME checks and Safety valves. That will leave Stanley and Whites out except for an old registration law that allows antiques to be OK as original cars. Keep it original. Need a good Judge and know the law.

The ASME code requires min 3/8 head plate on the boiler, I have never seen more then 5/16 used on Stanley boilers. Except mine. Mine hydroed at 1000 psi for 24 hr. It still would not pass in NY. Except as a antique.

Hello Rolly,

Do you know what kind of steel plate that Steve used for the frame pieces? I would think a higher grade, higher carbon plate but then you would need to heat up the part to braze it to the tube. Didn't know if that would mess up the qualities of the plate.

The frame is hickory not steel.
The axels are most likely 4130 or 4140.

Steve used seamless tube for the perch rods (frame)

I think Oldnrusty is refering to the machined axle brackets and yokes etc not the frame or the perch rods connecting the front and back axles. Hi Basil - I had a hickory perch rod break and replaced them with seamless tube - the hickory was a bad piece as they normally servive OK.
