The 1920 catalog included a few pages explaining the reasons that the Ashton pop safety valve was superior to it's competition.

I love the old advertisement art. Besides some beautiful fonts used for the lettering you can get a good look at many of the other products being advertised. A bit of a time capsule.

Ashton marble or slate tablets.
An attractive way to display multiple gages on the wall of a boiler room. One of these was on ebay a few years ago. It weighed almost 500 pounds, being a large slab of 1" thick slate, and you had to pick it up.
Here's a description from the 1914 catalog. " These tablets, like those on the following pages, are some of the most attractive designs for gages, both as to neatness of appearance and economy of space. They can be furnished in any style of marble or slate desired, and the prices include the necessary acorn nuts and gage screws. Name plates and wall bolts are always extra."

I believe the bezel was screwed to a fixture on a lathe, or machine made for the purpose, then the glass set into and held there with some sort of quick release tail stock.
A tool made for the purposes rolled the edge over the glass. It does not look like any sealant was used between the two.
Being brass and nickeled it may have been rolled over with a hard rubber wheel
Much like a knurling tool. Or it could have been pressed over with a die made of something that would not mark the plating.
Years ago I had J R Goold in England repair some gauges, they did not do the work themselves but had someone do the work for them. I had them build me a 1000 PSI
Gauge for my 1920 Stanley when I built the Derr boiler to run at that pressure. Another Gauge would leak water after about and hour at 400 + PSI and fill the glass up half way.
They replace the borden tube. I could not find one gauge shop in the US to do that work.

An interesting sales letter from 1897. It looks like a form letter with the address of the company being approached typed in at a later date.

I was recently contacted by a man who purchased an Ashton 3 chime whistle a few years ago. It's a beauty and he sent me some pictures? I'm leaning towards a steamboat whistle. What do you think?
