Chicagoland / SACA Fall Meet

Invitation to the 2019 SACA Annual Meet

September 13, 14, 15, 2019

From: Leo Weibel

To: SACA Club Members,

The Steam Automobile Club of America (SACA) and the SACA Chicagoland Chapter invite you to
attend the annual SACA meet to be held September 13 thru 15, 2019 in Berrien Springs, Michigan.
This year the Meet will be held at the Fairgrounds, 9122 U.S. 139, Berrien Springs, Michigan
49103, although Friday and Saturday evening will be held at Tom Kimmel’s steam shop for a cook
out dinner. The Sunday afternoon and evening activities will also be held at the shop.
The Meet is your opportunity to meet fellow steam car enthusiasts, discuss technology, learn and
teach, swap stories, see projects, hitch a steam car ride and establish contacts. Everyone is
encouraged to bring your project, the Fairgrounds are paved to make operating a vehicle easier and
there will be more tables to put whatever you bring on display.

As always, everyone is invited to talk about their steam projects. If you haven’t previously attended
the meet, we would love to get acquainted, hear what you have done, are doing, would like to do
and are planning to do. Being informal, we try not to be rigid when scheduling talks; they can
range from a two minute personal introduction and description of your steam interests to full
technical presentations lasting up to 45 minutes. Sometimes the discussions between presentations
are the most productive time of all; about 15 minutes each hour during the meets are set aside for
visiting with other attendees and discussing topics of mutual interest.

This isn’t to say the whole meet consists of indoor talks; it wouldn’t be a steam car meet if vehicles
weren’t running around. It’s the high point of the weekend.

Besides the regularly scheduled events on Friday through Sunday, you are invited to attend a
Thursday night meet-and-greet reception at Tom Kimmel’s house, 5:30 - 9:00. Tom has an
extensive collection of automotive steam-related hardware and literature; anyone staying over
Monday can meet to view his collection and discuss steam…or whatever other topics come to hand.
Call for papers: Let us know about your planned prepared presentations. We will have digital
projector available.

Hi Ken,
I'm excited this year to go to the Fall Meet at the Fairgrounds. I'll be leaving the southern tier of NY on Wednesday night, traveling through Canada to spend the night. Then Thursday 9/12 getting an early start and heading to the Steam Shop for around a 1 - 2:00 arrival.

I'm working on a presentation about Mono-tube/Water Level Boiler Design. I'd like to give it if time permits, say on Saturday. It will be a follow up to my presentation from the Spring Meet.

I know Tony is coming with his Delora and some Turbine experiments. Nick is coming, however, he is not riding with me this time.

I'm also excited to see you, Chuk, Scott, Tom S., Tom K. and a the whole gang...to many to mention! I especially want to see Jamison! I'm hoping to see the results of Chuk's new boiler design that is in line with my presentation? Chuk, if your listening, hope you can make it?

Hope that everyone participating in the Forum can make it to the meet? I can assure you that it is a worthwhile adventure and to talk with the folks I mentioned. I'm pretty sure there will be steam car rides. I really look forward to Tom K. shop tours smiling smiley smiling smiley winking smiley

Kind regards,
Rick Heinig

Hi Rick,

I'll be coming in Wednesday night, following Gary Hadden's truck. He's got a few issues with the truck and would like an emergency backup ride. Anyhow, it will be interesting to see his carriage in operation again ... not a lot of poppet valve, uniflow engines on horseless carriages. Anyhow, I wanted to be there Thursday morning to meet with the LSR team since I wasn't able to make the team meeting in May. Looking forward to seeing you and the gang. Sounds like Jim Anderson will be bringing some Doble books and I'm hoping we can view rough drafts of some of the other products under development including the Yuba, Scott-Newcomb, Coats and Winslow books.

Regards,

Ken

Looking forward to the meet and seeing everyone again! My go kart is ready to go with automated controls, jet pump boosted Ofeldt coiled boiler with the 100+ year old steam engine driving the wheels via a 6 speed transaxle. The steam engine is (cylinder) oil free as I converted all the seals for the valve and the piston with graphite. I plan on doing a presentation on the engine graphite conversion as well as the kart project in general. It’s a two seater, so rides should be available. It’s been working pretty consistently lately so I plan on not working on it much during the meet, except for maybe a little tweaking here and there. If it needs a major fix...it can wait until I get back home.

Rick...you may be out of luck this time about charging admission to watch me work lol...but as you know homemade steam stuff can be very unpredictable...so I don’t want to jinx itwinking smiley. Anyways, look forward to seeing you again, buddy.

Ken, I think I got the engine balanced pretty good but it still has a little bump to it. I understand that single cylinder engines can’t be perfectly balanced, but I’m interested in your input on ways to possibly smooth it out more. I can do separate presentations on the engine conversion and the kart project...or combine them in one bigger presentation....let me know what will work best. See you at the meet!

Jamison

Hi Jamison,

If perfectly balanced, the single cylinder engine will still have a rotating primary unbalance force. It will also have a smaller secondary force that propagates along the cylinder bore twice per revolution, versus once for the primary. These can be eliminated with balance shafts or dummy pistons.

Honestly, the only two ways I know to get ideal balance is to either disassemble the engine, weigh the components and then balance with correct bob weights. The other option is to string the engine from a beam and use a portable balancer ... I have no idea where to find one of those, any more.

You can balance through trial and error but human senses are only so good at determining force, and angle is much more difficult to resolve.

Anyhow, we can look at what you have and see if we can put together a program that you can live with.

Regards,

Ken

OK Jamison,
No admissions charge confused smiley

However, I formally request the first ride? I call shotgun!

Kind regards,
Rick
