Here is a Mason 70 I just finished restoring, having a new valve cover cast up with the Conrad Motor Carriage name on it as they originally did. Not bad for 120 years old.

Thanks, Fellas,

Received the valve cover back from the foundry today. Still have to square up the perimeter and put the holes in it.

Ron,

Immaculate workmanship, as usual. If I didn't know you restored it, I might of thought "Conrad Motor Carriage" was back in business and just opened up a dealership in Michigan.

The packing nuts appear similar to the ones on my old engine...except mine looks like a previous owner took a pipe wrench to them eye popping smiley. I would assume the proper tool is a spanner wrench. Are those set screws original on the Conrad packing nuts...and what kind of packing do you use?

Jamison,

Thanks. The "set screws" are actually holes that something round can be stuck in and used to tighten the gland nut. For packing at these pressure, I just use general purpose square graphite from McMaster carr. I see a lot of chatter about packing, but I must be lucky or something, I just don't have any trouble with packing beyond initial installation and maybe wee bit of adjustment later on. The lower pressures and obviously lower mileage has a lot to do with that. And too it's non condensing so we use copious amounts of oil.

The slots in the nut are actually for a retainer, an L-shaped piece of spring steel that goes in those and keeps it from turning.

Kyle, Thanks

Jamison, see the attached pic that shows the holes and the leaf spring retainers in the slots.
