2018 SACA Annual Meet
September 21, 22, 23, 2018

From: Leo Weibel

To: SACA Club Members,

The Steam Automobile Club of America (SACA) and the SACA Chicagoland Chapter invite you to attend the annual SACA meet to be held September 21 thru 23, 2018 in Berrien Springs, Michigan.

The Meet is your opportunity to meet fellow steam car enthusiasts, discuss technology, learn and teach, swap stories, see projects, hitch a steam car ride and establish contacts. There aren’t that many venues to rub elbows with people sharing your interest in the steam automobile.

We also invite you to tell us about your steam projects; if you haven’t previously attended we would love to get acquainted, hear what you have done, are doing, would like to do and are planning to do. Being informal, we try not to be rigid when scheduling talks; they can range from a two minute personal introduction and description of your steam interests to full technical presentations lasting up to 45 minutes. Sometimes the discussions between presentations are the most productive time of all; about 15 minutes each hour during the meets are set aside for visiting with other attendees and discussing topics of mutual interest.

This isn’t to say the whole meet consists of indoor talks; it wouldn’t be a steam car meet if vehicles weren’t running around. It’s the high point of the weekend.

Besides the regularly scheduled events on Friday through Sunday, you are invited to attend a Thursday night meet-and-greet reception at Tom Kimmel’s house, 5:30 - 9:00. Tom has an extensive collection of automotive steam-related hardware and literature; anyone staying over Monday can meet to view his collection and discuss steam…or whatever other topics come to hand.

Call for papers: Let us know about your planned prepared presentations. We will have digital projector available.

Hi Ken,
I'm leaving tomorrow and traveling through Canada to visit with Tony Grzyb. Unfortunately he can not make it this year, he had a procedure on his urinary track and Doctor said no travel. I'll see you Thursday night.

I should have 1 and possible 2 presentations. One definite is that I'm bringing my Ofeldt for my car, the Gentleman's Speedy Roadster. I'll have another talk if time allows is on Boiler Generating Tubes...sort of a continuation from the Spring Meet.

Travel safe and look forward to seeing you there.

Kind regards,
Rick

Ken,

Looking forward to it and will be driving up from Atlanta early Thursday morning to get to Kimmel’s place by 5ish. The newest weather forecast for Berrien Springs shows nice weather for the meet! I was a bit concerned because the forecast last week was calling for heavy rain.

The go kart should be working and available for rides, for those brave enough to ride shotgun in a homemade steam vehicle. Well....perhaps I should refrain from using terms like “shotgun” when inviting people to ride...

To All,
What a fantastic meet! I think everyone was successful with what they brought. All kinds of good things happening and lasting memories...Wonderful Time! Even got to see the Truck built for the show with Tom's Keen Steam Car Engine.

Jerry's bike was a really big hit! Jamison's Go-cart was an exploding exciting show! I loved it, I love that guy. Ken and Bill had great working steam machines...again a wonderful time! All kinds of steam equipment and good talks also, everyone was ... well, very pleasant to be around.

Some pictures to show the good time! See ya all next year!

Very best,
Rick

Rick,

Thanks, buddy...yeah, that was a great meet! Had a good time, met some new folks and it was great to see everyone again. Lots of working steam vehicles this time...including mine (finally!). Yup...this go kart is a perfect platform and will continue to develop it. All it really needs now is a better feedpump for it to work consistently, and I am working on the bash valve, linear drive piston pump I talked about before. Also in the works is a double acting, 1 1/4” bore engine cylinder that will be mounted on a gas engine for the crosshead....no more iffy, dry sump lubrication. Do you think a double acting, 1 1/4” bore x 2 1/4” stroke steam engine would have sufficient power for the kart? An engineers opinion on that would be helpful.
Anyhoo...just uploaded the video from the meet of the go karts inaugural drive on steam. Thanks to Craig Elliott for providing the awesome footage! Here is the link:

Rick,

Awesome....I could watch that steam punk, locomotive-drive scooter all day! Next meet...if it’s cool with you...I would love to go for a spin on it. I was the one who shouted “pop a wheelie” in the video. Lots-O-Fun at that meet....

I just got back from Cabin Fever in Lebanon PA. Some pics to enjoy. Someday I'll display my Scooter there and promote SACA.

Also want to get this thread near the top...so I can get to my Scooter cool smileyvideo

At the CNC booth, these guys are really creative, I showed the video to a crowd using their computer.
