10 hp boiler relief valve size??

Hello Gents,

I'm piping a 17" Stanley Bourdon boiler and I'm understanding it to be considered 10 hp. What NPT pipe size relief valve did they use?

Thanks, Ron

The Stanley pressure relief valve is 1/8 IPS
I always drill and tap my boilers for ¼ inch IPS and use SCH 80 forged steel fittings, just reduce the fitting at the relief valve. All the ones I’ve tested were set for 750 PSI.
I believe Don Borden now has the patterns for the valve.

Rolly,

Thank you much for that. I have the relief valve and it is 1/8" NPT, but I thought it may be small for that size boiler. So I'm all set on that. Nice to know Don has the patterns though.

I'm only going to run about 150 psi because it's a first model Mason with 3/8" brass piston rods, I don't think they will tolerate much more and I think that is the pressure that they ran the first Locomobiles at and where they got the 3-1/2 horsepower rating on the 1899's. They also used the first model Mason.

You should consider a second water pump. I believe that engine only has the one. At full power it won’t keep up with the engine usage. At least that is my experience. Maybe some superheat might work.

Rolly,

The first model Mason only has one pump, it's a 9/16" bore X 3/4" stroke. The boiler/burner at 17" is larger than the 14" etc boiler than most of these little carriages used, but the steam demand will be much lower with that engine/vehicle weight and intended speed, so I'm thinking lower steam demand, lower water requirement, should equate to faster steam generation and overall steam production and the pump should be able to keep up.

I did add a few feet of superheat over the top on the way to the throttle.

- One of the interesting features of this restoration is the Victor/Overman Westinghouse type air and water pumps. Unbelievably, they still work (sorta), they need a little TLC, but I ran them on air and they each cycled back and forth.

Rolly,

Exactly, I won't really know until I run it. Hopefully that is soon.
