Craig Elliott, a new club member and M.E. out of Canada bought up two interesting things at the meet. Apparently PTC offers a lighter but still powerful version of Mathcad:

Free MathCad Express

Now you can pick it up for free. It isn't the full boat, but looks like it has the most important features without all the bells and whistles.

Then there is CyclePad. This was developed by Northwestern University to model thermodynamic cycles (Power and Refrigeration). Basically it allows you to add elements (expanders, compressors, heat exchangers and so on), specify working fluids, open and closed cycles and so on. Then it walks you through the parameters you need to add and calculates whatever else is left. Then it works out all the math for the cycle you put on the screen. Since it knows what the temperature and characteristics of waste heat are, it could actually provide reasonable estimates for bottoming and binary cycles.

CyclePad

What can I say? CyclePad is free, too!

CyclePad, especially, looks fun if you just want to putter around looking at various alternatives for different projects.

Regards,

Ken
