It's a really big file! I am not sure how else to do it, has anyone else had problems viewing these pictures?

Hi Chris
I have had no problem and can even access it from my IPhone. Jim could be having a problem with not using cookies. Hope you don't mind but I've reduced a few examples for viewing here. If you like I can reduce some more if it helps.
Brian

No problem for me - just ignore the invitation to sign up and it all works fine and opens quickly to view on my PC even with our slowish Broadband (6mbps). I suspect Jim's problem is down to his use of the dreaded Mac whose exclusive operating system does just that - excludes a lot of non compatible things.sad smiley

Brian, Mike,,
You are probably right, its this damn computer.
The engine photos are too dark to see; but the only thing I want to see is if the crankshaft has two added pie shaped counterweights next to the drive gear. Not the ones on the connecting rod throws, these if they are there were added to stop the bad shaking.

Jim
I would say there is no weights either side of the drive gear, it is very broad and the stephenson linkage is very close to it. Also the drive gear is very small diameter so I doubt if any material was removed from it to create balance. Once I'm back on the PC I'll brighten up and post the photos that best show the gear. Hope Chris is ok with me re-posting them?
Brian

Edit. ok home now and uploaded these altered images which hopefully show the drive detail.

Re: what is this - R Bell
August 24, 2015 10:57PM
Good Evening, Chris!

The R Bell you reference is probably Rodney Bell. He was an apprentice in A & G Price's shop in 1930 - 1933 during the Doble Steam Bus experiments in New Zealand. H. H. Stewart (1888 - 1950), who came to Detroit to see Doble's steam bus experiments with the Detroit Motorbus Company in the 1920s, was the NZ steam car engineer who brought Doble to New Zealand. Earlier he was the Stanley Agent in NZ and came to America in 1924 to help design the 1925 SV. The Steam Vehicle Corporation ignored most of his advice.

I've just finished a biogrpahy of Stewart and there are extensive sections on Doble's bus work in both Detroit and New Zealand. Stewart owned one of Doble's experimental journals and it is now in the Virtual Steam Car Museum.

The 160,000 word 450+ illustration manuscript is headed to the book designer as soon as the copy reader is done, no later than September 7.

Yes the Virtual Steam Car Museum is still accepting donations to support publication.

Best wishes!

Don Hoke

Hi Don
Amongst your A & G Price files do you have any mention of F. R. Bell and C. T. Bower who I believe both worked on the bus project. The Bancroft collection used to list F. R. Bell in one of the group photos but it seems to have been removed.

Cheers

Good Morning, Brian!

There are two or three Bells, but I don't recall the name Bower.

You're not on the Virtual Steam Car Museum email list. Send me your email and I'll put you on if you like.

Hi Don
I am signed up for your newsletter and even made a donation a while back.
I believe Francis Robert Bell was chief engineer at A&G Price during the bus project then came to UK to work with Rolls Royce and Rover during the war. He is famous for the Rover Gas Turbine car and appears in the publicity photos.
Cheers Brian

Good Morning, Brian!

Delighted you're on the list. There are almost 800 names, some of whom are not steam car people.

And Thank You for your support!

Very best wishes!

JIm I don't blame you on the malware/adware concern....I can run my main computer for months without problems.
The other 3 computers can't go a week without problems(mostly bundled trash) bad enough that you are working full time to recover the computer back from the various programs.Telling them about proper security precaution falls on deaf ears.
Seem to be more and more folks harvesting data by hook or crook...had a lot of practice killing the stuffoff, so it is easier, but the wave is getting bigger with adware/malware.At times ,in frustration ,want to let the deaf ears fix thier own problems. And lock your primary computer away in hiding for fear of someone coming over to your computer after they trash thier's.Maybe then they will listen to you.

Hi,

Or, one could just run Linux and have none of those troubles at all.

Best,

And so what is this?

Re: what is this

Hi, Chris!

I don't know what that is. It might be Doble.

Some of the photos on eBay of this pump show casting numbers. 531 D1 and 532 D1. Are these anything like Doble configuration or maybe Sentinel?

Is that the that Steve Theobauld has for sale? If so it does have a D2 casting number.

D1 or D2 I will check, what does that indicate?
Re: what is this

Unfortunately I have no idea what the D1 or D2 designation means. Perhaps Jim Crank can shed some light on the subject, as I'm sure he knows the answer.

Keith,
No idea although the motor does look like a E Series Bosch blower motor. Quite possibly some electric priming pump. Howard Hughes did have one in E-20 when he was fooling around with the car.
Where is this pump and who took the picture?

Hi Jim
Its one I have just picked up, obviously a pump, but only has one delivery port, the clacks/non return valves are in their own brass/bronze housings and are spring loaded onto the seats, the inlet seems to be via the main body, with glands into the crank case and into the pump bodies, hollow up the inside of the pump plunger, with the inlet valve in the ram?
