Penberthy Injector

Hello all;

I did a search on the forum, didn't find any info so I thought I'd ask. Sorry if this has been covered before, but I don't know how far back the archives go.

It seems that in pretty much all automotive steam the feed water pump is mechanical. On locomotives they are almost without exception steam injectors (penberthy injectors). I've been wondering why they are not used in automotive steam. I understand they can't be throttled, but I guess you could have a small high pressure water accumulator that the injector fills up, then have a solenoid valve that admits water to the boiler when needed.

a while back I asked a similar question about if an injector had ever been used as the "pump" with a monotube steam generator. it seems like it might work up to about 160 psi. I purchased a Penberthy Injector and hope it attempt using it

There not used because they only work up to 350 PSI most exiting car are running 400 to 600

Is that an inherent limitation of the injector? You just can't create any more pressure with the supersonic jet of steam?

I’m not sure, but Penberthy injectors only go to 350 PSI, I’ve got three of them. And I’ve never found any that go higher.
Any steam plant should have three devices to get water into the boiler. Most of the cars I’ve seen and the two Stanley I’ve had have two piston water pumps and a hand pump. On my boats I always used an engine driven pump a hand pump and an ejector.

The physics of the Penberthy injector limits its successful operation to about 350 pounds. Mechanical means for feed water are necessary for boiler pressures above that.

If someone is interested in selling a 1/2" Penberthy or other 1/2" injector please let me know - mjanssen@monida.us. Thanks.

In fairness most piston steam are running too high pressure ,but low pressure turbines can use them when they are running steam locomotive style pressures....maybe even to the point that the old locomotives did in fact use them.
One of my combined cycle guys was wanting to turbo charge a diesel at tractor pull boost pressures(200 psi).And steam
looks like good way of intercooling 500+ F. intake air on a steam turbine running 30 to 60psi steam.
Depending on the steam turbine in question that could be water preheat in a total water or the spray condenser in a ammonia/water vapor turbine. And extreme turbocharging looks like an area that could use Kalina like what is already happening with geothermo systems.....mainly because the IC engine is already as complex as Kalina.
