Chuk Williams Accident at Bonneville, may be hurt
September 06, 2014 02:12PM
Hello everyone,

The World of Speed meet is broadcasting live at [www.meridix.com]

Chuk ran at about 2:40 eastern time, but after pulling the chutes at the end of the run, the car spun and flipped. The track was closed for clean up of debris.

The announcer put on recorded programming. In a gap between programs there was the sound of a siren going by their announcing booth. I assume this was an ambulance.

The internet broadcast itself has dropped out (at least I can't get it). I'm sorry, I wish I could report more.

His speeds were reported during the run. I tried to get these down, but don't think I got everything right. This is what I've got:

Mile 1: 100 mph
Mile 1.25: 114 mph
Mile 2: 121.906
Mile 3: 135.955
Mile 4: 144.092
Exit speed 147 mph.

The announcer said he had missed the record (Crank-Barber Steamin Demon) by less than a mile per hour.

Tim,

For God's sake get the news and report, is Chuk OK, very concerned????
That broadcast is blank.
Why did Chuk use the chute and not the brakes?? We never touched our chute once.
Excellent run, oh so close. So what condition is the car in, sounds like it got wrecked if they closed the track to remove the debris?

From Tom Kimmel 5 minutes ago:

September 6, 2014

Dear Ken, Myles Twete says that Chuk has a broken arm and was airlifted to Salt Lake City and that Robin will report after she gets there and sees him. It could be worse. Tom Kimmel

Hi Jim,

I'm afraid I haven't been able to learn any more.

The audio part for earlier today is available at [www.meridix.com] Chuk comes up at about 3:11 in the recording. The recording goes for another hour, but I didn't hear any mention of Chuk's condition.

One hopeful sign is that an ambulance was used, and not a helicopter. Wendover is a pretty small. I imagine the nearest trauma center is in Salt Lake City. Presumably they felt that was not needed.

Another inference is that the car started to spin at mile 5.5, half a mile past the finish line. Presumably he would have slowed down quite a bit in that distance.

Hopefully we'll hear more soon.

I just received word from Tom Kimmel, who just received a phone call from Nick Messmer at the hospital with Chuk and Robin.

Chuk has broken an arm in two places. There are some other injuries but it is expected that he will recover fully.

Word is that Chuk is more worried about having let people down by not setting the record than he is about himself....hopefully someone will gently knock that notion out of his mind.

Chuk's memory is a bit hazy, probably from being knocked around by the roll, but he deployed the chute about half a mile after the finish line and he seems to recall that the salt was getting pretty soft and that he was having trouble handling the car.

Not much else to report/

I'm sorry Chuk is hurt but also gratified that the long term prognosis looks good.

Thanks for the excellent report Ken. I am relieved to hear it is not as bad as I initially thought--the audio tape was very scary. And of course, I am looking forward to Chuk being back on track as usual!

All,
Greatly relieved, it could have been a lot worse. At first it sounded really bad.

Wendover is so small it's doubtful they even have a part time vet, at least when we were there.
A couple of third rate casinos and maisons de whoopee and that was that. Salt Lake city has some really good hospitals, so he is in good hands.
Guess the car got rather damaged; but that can be repaired. Chuk can not.

That's a relief - hope you mend soon Chuk. Don't worry about letting anyone down - it's a heroic task you've set yourself so much to go wrong.

Get well soon Chuck, you can take credit for the fastest piston engine steamer versus Jim's turbine car. No mean feat.

It’s a great relief to hear Chuk will recover. I was looking over the photos of the frame and find it hard to imagine how he was able to get hurt. You just can’t plan for the unknown. I am assuming it was his first run. Must be kind of difficult the adjustment or compensation in adjusting the burner from sea level in Florida to 5100 feet above sea level at Bonneville.

We all at Cyclone wish Chuk a speedy recovery.
.We are all steam fans here.
It is OK to break machines but not people..
I calculated Chuk at 147mph used 74 hp so according to his dyno., 80hp it appears he might have been able to go faster.
The preveious post said the track was mushy and this could lead to a higher rolling resistance than the car's 22# on hard ground.
All the best recovery
Good Luck Chuk

CHUK, You are awesome! I can see you in the red 200 club hat, NOW! So glad you are on the mend and mend-able.

Really proud of your all American hot rod with a steam twist. You're just the guy to do this and with pistons no less.

Were the speed number posted earlier pretty accurate?

No doubt you were spinning wheels on the way down with the torque you're making.

Get well soon, and let us know your assessment on the car.

Ken,
You know some of the test track folks. It might be useful to see if any of the failure study guys might be interested in this project. Since it's not clear what happened, might be worthwhile to have someone that looks at broken stuff for a living see if this was an equipment failure.

Hi Tom,

Been kind of swamped and didn't even realize you'd addressed me. Truthfully, the only test track guy I know is my cousin, the testing I am more tied into is dynamometer. Actually, maybe 20 years ago when I toured the facility, almost all the crash analysis is done at the Warren Tech Center.

In any case, a post mortem on the accident may be premature. After an accident like that, it would be natural for anyone to reconsider if they want to take the risk again. It certainly wouldn't help matters to create any sort of expectations. I don't even intend to discuss the remote possibility of a future run with Chuk, and I would hope everyone else would do likewise. If he did decide to try, I would support him, but if he decided not to I would just as strongly support him.

I never thought the record was all that important in and of itself. Truthfully, anyone with enough money could easily beat the current record, in absolute terms it isn't that big a deal. The important thing is the inspiration his pursuit of the record provided. Chuk showed that a little guy with few resources, but great dedication, could do something big if he worked hard. That he put people ahead of the project while doing so is even more instructive.

OK, I didn't intend to preach...Tom didn't warn me that this might become part of the job. I would just appreciate people giving Chuk his space so that he can determine what course is best for him.

Thanks!

Ken

Chuk- Val and I were so relieved to hear that you suffered no life threatening injuries. You're tough and you'll heal smiling smiley.
It was certainly the last thing on any of our minds that this might happen. We were so looking forward to seeing you and the steamer run the track over a period of days and then sitting around the camp at night sharing stories. Thankfully you came through this intact.

To put things in perspective for folks, my wife Val was taking still shots prior to and after the launch while I was capturing the video before and then during the launch from the push vehicle. Meanwhile, the crew were scrambling to get into the van and were then racing to the end of the track in expectation to tow the steamer back to the pits. As we pushed the steamer, at some point it had slipped away from us but wasn't taking off, so we reapproached it and pushed again up to 40-45mph. At some point I just said 'well, that should be enough' and we broke away...I was pleased to see the steamer continue and accelerate after and I then ended the video recording. As with all the bystanders and crew, we heard the speeds called out and I informed the folks driving our push vehicle that those speeds were quite good. Everyone, including the crew racing down the track, was excited clear to the end. The only inkling we had that something went wrong was hearing something about the track being shut down because of debris at the end of the track. Then we saw the ambulance go out and back and our hears sank. Back at the pits, we waited. Robin and the rest of the pit crew arrived and scrambled to unload stuff from the van and then most of them drove off to SLC while we heard that Chuk was airlifted there. Tom, Val and I started disassembling the pits and quickly got help from the world speed record holding team from Kelso Washington (twin-diesel Freightliner streamliner(?) that does 250mph). Those 10 or 12 guys (and a gal or two) couldn't be told no---they just said "hey, we're all family here---let us help".

We watched more racing that afternoon and there were no other crash events. The organizers announced that they'd run cars until dark as long as folks were willing to race to make up the 3 hours or so of track shutdown from the motorcycle accident in the early morning, then Chuk's misfortune. Noone seemed upset about the long lines and delays and there were many record runs (or at least several cars were announced to go into impound). There was virtually no wind all afternoon and maybe a bit of a tail wind for the racers.

We didn't know what to do on Sunday. Tex, Jim, Tom & Nick all went to the pits but word we got by phone was that the steamer debris wouldn't be released until the end of racing on Sunday so they were just sitting waround...meanwhile Chuk & Robin weren't at all sure when they'd leave SLC let alone whether they'd head back to the salt flats or drive the van. Ultimately, we didn't think there was anything more we could help with. We were going to head back to the pits Sunday morning and at least say goodbye to the crew, but when we got to the entrance to the flats we could see that the mire was worse than it had been the prior 2 days---we saw a van and a mercedes getting towed back out... I didn't worry about getting stuck as much as I just didn't want to cake more salt on the underside of the '81 vanagon (we had given it 3 sets of quarters at the car wash late on Saturday and I still had gobs of the stuff on the bottom). Even now, 9 days later, I chipped & sprayed another 2 or 3 pounds of salt out from corners underneath the carriage (this after chipping about 10# of it that I discovered 2 days ago while we were camping).

Anyway, a tragic accident was so far from any of our expectations that everyone involved was pretty dumbfounded. Val and I had a great journey back home and would definitely be there to support another go at Bonneville if that happens again.

Take care Chuk!

Myles Twete, Portland, Or.

P.S. - Guess this wasn't the only streamliner crash at WOS --- Speed Demon also was badly damaged but driver okay:

Salt bogging path from the road to the pits...

Myles,

Thanks for the story. We all care about Chuk. It sounds like there were some really nice people out there.
