Team Steam USA
[teamsteamusa.com]

Hi Guys
Check out the new Cyclone streamliner site. It shows all the details of the new project.
We have been invited to make the first test and record runs at the NASA strip at Cape Canaveral.
We would like to invite all our fellow sponsors to be apart of the new project.
Cyclone was also a sponsor of the previous program, and though we did not receive any sponsorship money, we will honor you name on the trailer and credits to you.
We expect to bring the new streamliner to Berrien Springs in September. Nelson the driver is looking forward to being there also. He is a new SACA member and steam enthusiast.

The web site is new so send me your thoughts on it,
Harry

Hi Folks,

As "Your Friendly Neighborhood Forum Monitor", may I please remind everyone that one of the distinguishing features of the SACA Phorum over many other internet venues is the free exchange of ideas in a friendly, open environment? This is true even if we have to censor the crap out of posts to keep things friendly and open! grinning smiley

The Golden Rule applies here, as elsewhere. Do not post anything you would not like to see posted about yourself. If in doubt, simply ask yourself the simple question: "Is that a$$H*le Ken likely to delete this?"

I understand competition tends to get the blood a'pumpin', and far be it from me to demean the productivity competition engenders, but please take a moment to remind yourself that the Phorum is a community meeting place and that we all have to show a little restraint in order to receive a little. Heaven's knows I appreciate the restraint that has been thrown my way in the past.

I thank you all kindly for your attention and courtesy.

We now return you to your regularly scheduled Phorum discussions.

Regards,

Ken

Hi Harry

I do not know what it would take but for you I think a Cyclone in a Dream MachineI on SYFY would get much more public atention. The machine in that vid is from this weeks program. It a 500HP electric.

Thanks Andy,
We were featured on How It's Made and other shows. We are not a big company but we are growing from a lot of blood sweat, tears and loyal friends. It is amazing that when a new person goes to work here, they become really personally involved with the engine or project that they are working on. When we have a photo shoot for a project, the photo journalists have favored us in special ways and spent extra time. They like the stuff.
A visit here would give people a different point of view on a lot of things. Seeing engines running. The MKV is especially impressive and it matches the calculations very closely. When running on the dyno we always start at full load as the exceleration at full cutoff is a straight line up and then you have to pull it to short cutoff. When Nelson saw the torque on this little engine, he said, "Wow we have to start the gas engines at no load as they will stall." Sponsors are already coming in and some big ones are looking at us. They like the professionalism of the team.

Here is what is happening at Cyclone. This is the after body shell being completed to fit the engine compartment and the forward section. The whole system is coming together quite well. The little blister at the top of the fin is for the camera. This part will be built in a split mold to mold the fin in one piece the forward parts will be one piece molds. We are building molds for this car as duplicates will be made for the sponsors for display.

Hi Guys
We are gathering steam as Mickey Thompson has joined us for the tires for our car. Others sponcers are starting to line up.
The aft body mold is finished and the parts have been laid up and will be assempled today. tomorrow it will be taken from the mold.
The chassie will be finished July 15. It is very professionaly made and I enjoyed working with Nelson on the design.
Nelson and I grew up in the Miami area and both enjoyed racing ,he in cars me in boats. Building them ourselves. No big corporations just dreams. Again we will still honor the sponcers of the preveious Cyclone project even though we did not receive any of the money, but we know you want to see the Cyclone succeed.

Hi Guys
We just recieved the donated frame for the Team Steam USA dragster. Another project Nelson will be doing. Getting the record for steam with a Cyclone engine. I do not know if a steam dragster record exists. We will be using the old LSR body that we build last year for this project.
The LSR frame should be here Thursday.

That body looks awful heavy for a dragster.

Re: Team Steam USA
July 19, 2012 01:59PM
Hi Heavy
Actually the body is very light and will weigh less than 175 lbs, the frame is only about 140 lbs pluss other parts. The Mark 6 engine in this configuration will be only300lbs.
Of course the body was built here so any modifications are very easy for us. It will be consedered a light car for a professional dragster following the rules. The LSR car of course is the first hurdle and progressing rapidly. The body plug is built and final finish is taking place. It should be ready to mold on Monday. Nelson is well known in the dragster circles and operates a drivers school with a two seater dragster that does the 1/8 mile in 5 seconds.

Hi Harry,,,Just to update an old-timer,,,,
How many pages of specs does this frame conform to,,
In 1906 , the rule was "" under one metric ton [ 2204 pounds ]
applied 1902? to 1910,,there were other smallr classes also,,
Race car design has come a long way,,thank goodness,,
and remember the memories to those no longer with us that created these changes,,
As ever,,,,Ben

Hi Ben,
This comes under the rules of Bonneville whereas the frame for stream liners is to be made of chrome mollie tubing 1.625 diameter X .090 wall and 65" from the back of the roll bar foward. There are other rules about the tires. and other parts. My friend Bob Hinkel donated the first set of tires for the original LSR car and Mickey Thompson donated the new ones and these are rated for over 300 mph. I do not think there were many rules back then. Safety rules sadly came the hard way. I came from the world of boat racing and lost a few friends. The canopys that are on the boats now saved lives, as well as the roll cages on the cars. Just look at Fred Marriot peeping out of that upside down cannoe with the spoked wheels and getting up to 150 mph,,,,, remarkable.. scarry by todays standards. I rember in the 70's when they first put in a physical exam requirement to race. They did that when old pop Smith forgot to turn his 280 hydro and went in to the trees at the end of the Marine Stadiun course,,,,,he passed the phyical!!

Harry.

Explain that 65" rule a bit more. Thats not the total length obviously. Just qurious. That must be the cockpit right.

Re: Team Steam USA
July 21, 2012 03:28PM
Hi Andy'
Yes, that is considered the cockpit area 65" from the back of the roll cage to the front of the foot rest area. This must be the 1.625 x .090 wall CM tube. This is used to give a predictable crumple zone and is simular to a gragster frames that have proven there worth. The frame foward and aft of the cockpit area are left up to the chassis builder. In our car we will be extending this larger tubing foward and aft for safety reasons as our intentions are to go a lot faster than indended for the original car. Dyno runs show very good results and we had the extra time from starting over building another body to expand the hp of the engine. As our first goal is 200 mph and we feel that is not all that is left.

Re: Team Steam USA
July 30, 2012 01:58PM
Hi Heavy,
As you can see we have big ambitions. The more we ran the MK 5 engine on the dyno the more we learned. It is necessary to do this and get the run of the engine as close to the course run as possible. Too long a cutoff and you will use to much steam too short and not enough torque. When we removed the engine from the dyno last it had more than enough hp to easly beat the record. It had a fuel burn rate of less than 8 gal per hr. Since Nelson came aboard and he has had enough high speed experance to up the anty. Our final real ambition is 250mph with this engine, but we will settle for 200mph for now. A larger MK6 engine will be the up grade to run in the 300 mph range. at the present we have increased the heat exchanger and will have the ability to burn twenty gal per hr. Things are progressing rapidly and we pulled the foward section of the body mold from the pattern. The gearbox is being modified to have a neutral so as to have a better push start then engauge at aroung 80mph.
This is a radio interview that Nelson and I did Friday night This is a fun project with an engine that has a very good chance of being in your car some day. Join in.

Harry,

When the interviewer asked what made the steam hot in you LSR powerplant, instead of beating around the bush and changing the subject to your other projects, why in the world didn't you just tell him that it ran on FIRE? That is the plain and simple truth.

I would like to also point out that they had a whole lot more to work with then "just cast iron" back in 1907. That Stanley Rockets boiler and engine combo was capable of making in excess of 200 hp, closer to 250 when really pushed. More and more proof is croping up that they broke a lot of those early 4 1/2" by 6 1/2" racing engines by pushing them too hard. My figures show that if the boiler pressure was well up and the engine was at speed a wide open throttle would have pushed the engine very close to 400 hp for a rather brief moment, which would of course have busted it quickly.

I am also very confused as to why you didn't acknowledge the car that Mr. Jim Crank made, which eventually beat the Rockets record. That doesn't make much sense, nor show much respect for your partners.

Hi Caleb,
I agree with you about Jim Crank ,however when you have a.commentator shooting question at you in a liminated amount of time you do the best you can. The engines that we are working on do run on more than fire as some are solar engines. They are basicaly heat engines. yes fire makes heat as well as other things. The interview went over well and they want to do some more and I will keep you suggestions in mind.
Jim has been a big help as well as George and Bob and a lot of other people. The web site is in the process of being up dated to reflect Jim's acomplishments with his car , far more records than the Brits.
About materials , we are at an advantage over the pioneers with what we have today and stated what a job they did with what they had to work with. They did have a cast iron block which we could not use . Thanks for discussing about this and joining in.

Hi Guys
Update on the LSR project.
Finished the mold for the lexan canopy and the blank to go into the foward body mold to receive the canopy is nearly finished. The foward body section should be finished this coming this week. The engine hatch section mold should also be finished. Nelson is having the seat section and the steering and peddels installed in the frame. Just ran the engine and it is real sweet. The new larger heatexchanger should be finished the end of next week then will be put on the dyno for a final dialing in, then in the chasses. Nelson has this and the resorces for this project under control as most of my time is spent helping with production engineering on another project. I will get out some pictures on Monday. Check on the web site for more progress.

Re: Team Steam USA
August 17, 2012 05:03PM
Hi Clint,
At the present we plan to use D-limone ( orange peel oil). and other fuels preferring bio fuels. We have eight days scheduled at Cape Canerval but not consecutively. Of course it will be run in the shop first then on the street then on to Moroso Speed way in West Palm Beach. If all goes well, on to the Cape. The engine is ahead of the rest of the project as there was a major set back as we could have been to Bonneville this year. We had to build a new car, and Nelson is overseeing the project. The forward section of the body will be out of the mold on Wednesday and the frame is having the steering installed as well as the pedals. It is progressing rapidly. I would like to give you a better time frame on this but I will keep you up to date on it. To make things clear , the Cyclone company was started by three people with a dream and there own money and hard work no huge corporation ( we still have not received any money) then joined by others to build a steam engine that will benefit everyone, not just for a dream to satisfy the ego of on person.
The extra time was used to enhance the project as the car will be safer, more reliable and faster.

Harry

I am assuming with the phrase in your last post "as there was a major set back as we could have been to Bonneville this year" you did not mean to infer that the LSR will not go ahead this year?

Also, what is the rough schedule now for NASA and shipping to Bonneville? Any exact day appointed for the LSR at Bonneville?

Keep up the great work. I appreciate your team's tremendous persipiration and inspiration on the engine. Looking forward to a tremendous future!

All the very best.

Hi Scotty
Team Steam is managing the project and it is a donation situation. Donars are coming in and progress may depend on this, It WILL happen.
Last year we, Cyclone, did not receive any of the money as it was held by the other team, and some of the contributors are up set as it was to go to a Cyclone project. It is time to move on. We have a winning team and a very winning car. There is anouther time frame in October to run in Bonneville but is is very close to all the work that has to be done. NASA is only a few hours up the road from us and is more conducive for guests to view with out a huge cost.
I do not think that much over 200 mph could be achieved because of the 3 mile run. Bonneville is anouther story as we will be looking for a much larger gain. Please help support the cause and bring steam power to the world. I am here at the shop weekends and evenings as I need to stay on the production of engines during the rest of the week and, sometimes I get a chance to do some thing on the car. Today I am finishing up the foward suspension system design.
It is very close to the Berrine Springs meet and last year we brought the first car, we will try to bring the new one but it is very close. We will be attending however with pictures, engines, graphs and an indepth explation of the Cyclone engine. Please come you will enjoy the talks from the group of very well informed steamed enthusiast and the cars that they bring.

I canot take credit for that but Marla, Nelsons wife , another Frankie, She gets er done, Marla is manageing the Team Steam project and Nelson is doing the car. There will be a lot of other projects under the Team Steam banner. Cars ,boats, motorcycles, golf carts, just about anything that rolls, floats or flies. This will help in the marketing of the Cyclone engine. Thanks again for being on the team and a part of history.
Now back to work
