Hi:

I have to agree, my experience 'way back in the '70's was very positive--you just need to respect the abilities of this wonderful fitting. Review all specs and operational requirements and you'll have the best of the best IMO.

One of the possible problems with Swagelock fittings in the highest temperature connections is that the very high occasional steam temperatures are above the annealing temperatures of the tubing and the compressive stresses of the fitting are relieved;the tubing can no longer have a force resistance to the fitting, then the fitting has to be retightened again. Think Cyclone experienced this with such high steam temperatures.
I believe my old MIT friend Dave Nergaard went thru fitting problems years ago and went back to old fashioned flared fittings Swagelock are great fittings for lower temperatures but may well have there limitations on 900-1200F steam temperatures glowing a dull red.

Harry,

With assumption Harry's post will make it back here, can we assume that by one piece you mean welded? Pretty hard to have one piece that has varying cross sections or properties?

Thanks for mention of Zip sensors. Good to promote sponsors. I have a high response system that I need to purchase soon. Good to have alternates and will check them out.

Hey Everyone!

Finally the paint shop finished with the body and it's back where it belongs-on the vehicle! Seems like it always comes down to the last minute with the paint job-eh?

The vehicle is back together-ready to run! We've gone thru everything-lubing, pressure testing, etc, etc, making sure there are no glitches or problems when the time comes to rev it up and go! The continuation of that process will begin next week-we'll be running on the dyno....getting all our feedwater settings/fuel ratio, etc, just right so there's no screwing around when we get to the salt.

Only 6.5 weeks til we leave for Bonneville-there is still lots to do-but we're getting to the "icing on the cake" part of the project! Building the vehicle has been a fun thing for me, running the steam plant and making sure everything works as it should is another milestone-but the real kick in the pants is driving the vehicle at speed! Like I said-that's the "icing on the cake"!

From the feedback I've been getting, it looks as though we're going to have a real crowd there at Bonneville to cheer us on! This is gonna be the first time a steam-powered vehicle has run at Speed Week since 1985!

Join us-just for the fun of it!

Hi Chuk:

She's a real beauty! Congratulations on your fine effort and we all wish you the best of luck.

I can only imagine the massive workload you have endured, preparing this effort at the level you're working on. Just know that you have the positive energy of so many supporters to keep you going.

All the Best,

Bill

Chuk,
I want to see you smash the Brits old record and ours by a wide margin.
Bonneville record or FIA too?
Take whatever is necessary to change the ratio if you want, your engine should have the necessary torque.
Wonder if there is any way to have a live video feed to this site? And not with some fuzzy phone camera either.
I do wish you all the luck in the world. Be safe.

Just a "re-hash": [www.youtube.com]

Chuk is living all our dreams, it's just unimaginable to think how he can do this and I believe he should be our hero here.

If anyone thinks they can do better, I think they're smoking the good stuff.

After the effort he put into going to Bonneville last year and running his project in spite of teething problems, I can only imagine what he will be able to accomplish this year. For those who don't know, he has the support of many of the finest minds in the current idiom of advanced steam power as we know it.

I'm gonna try to go to Wendover to support Chuk, it's a long drive but do-able; I hope to provide moral support and to be able to participate in a wonderful event for steam power.

Go, Chuk!!

Chuck.. The Hot Rod looks like a million bucks.. Don't forget the Ernie loves Robin in magic marker on the back bumper.. LOL! Yes... I'm still chasin' the dream too.. good thing my dream doesn't have 4 tires on it!! With my wealth status, it's hard enough trying to chase a dang nurse much less a world record.. LOL! Would scare the heck out of me if I ever caught it.. But a little advertising can never hurt! You be safe out there in Utah! If the golden goose craps before August I will look forward to shaking your hand after you have the record in your pocket!!! Take care Kid!!

Fingers are crossed and prayers are with you.. Ernie

Hey-

Thanks for the continuing support everyone! Time is passing, and we're keeping the pace up-we're just about ready to begin our test runs on the dyno. Tom Stoecker has taken time off and driven down to help me with the shakedown work. We finished up most of the small details today, and we should be ready to run tomorrow. Lots of work has gone into making sure we have a dependable machine that will run fast and run well-the dyno tests will show us where the weak links are-if there are any.

Ernie- Your mantra is already on the car-as it was on the previous body! You should come on out and help us with the party!

Keith-The paint is a metalflake blue...I originally planned on using a turquoise-but couldn't get what I wanted-so the blue is it!

I'm off to get some rest-tomorrow comes early!

Cheers--Chuk

A few words here on how Bonneville works. The salt flats are a pretty intense experience with heat and sunlight reflecting off the salt. The fun part is walking around the pit area which goes on for a mile and is about four layers deep. It is a cheerful group who is, individually, pretty nice to everyone, tourists and all. The place is over-run with photographers and magazine reporters. Everyone stops by to stare and ask the usual questions. The SCTA people have plenty of port-a-pots scattered around. There is a hamburger stand on the premises. Most of the time is spent pulling the vehicles the 3-4 miles from the pit area to the ends of the four tracks, and back for more fine tuning. This is a long, slow, and bumpy ride. There is much casual milling around at the starting line and hand pushing the vehicle along. The most problematical part of Bonneville is passing Tech. The SCTA people have their own rules, years of experience enforcing them, and they are really not interested in suggestions on how they can improve their operation. Once Tech is passed everyone is helpful because they want America to beat the Brits. Camping at "The Bend" is primitive. There are no port-a-pots. It is also cheap and fun if you are tough. In October we like near froze at night. The core group of Chuk's team are survivors of Burning Man and thus this is a walk in the park for us. Going to Bonneville involves a huge number of unknown and unpredictable variables. Other than that, it is a good way to pass one's golden years. Tom Kimmel

Well-

Our Steam Speed America Record Attempt is going to be postponed until the World Finals at Bonneville in October. We have run into problems that have delayed our testing program, and we haven’t achieved the consistency that we want.

This decision has been a very tough one to make, as I’m sure you can imagine. We have planned on making this event for years now, but going to Bonneville without being properly prepared is not the way to go.

Our problems are centered around the performance of the steam generator burner. Last October we burned 16-17 gph quite comfortably, but for the actual Record Attempt, we want to have the capability to burn 20-24 gph. The difficulty concerned with burning that amount of fuel usually depends on the ability of the blower to supply the required amount of air. We have solved that problem, but the big blower has changed the dynamics of the burner in such a way that now we need time to do the required redevelopment work on the burner.

On the brighter side-it is cooler in October-so more of you can feel comfortable while you help us celebrate!

I apologize for any inconvenience that our postponement may have caused anyone, and hope you will join us in October.

Regards-Chuk

Chuk,
Don't apologize. Be sure as possible before going all that way and then finding out the car is not running the way it should.
You already have a car that you know will run and the support of the Bonneville people, so just dyno test it to verify the changes, then make the trip.

Hey-

Our testing program has finished, and I am pleased with the results! Our tweaking and redevelopment of the burner has done away with the issues we had before and the numbers from the dyno have shown that we have the power we need for Bonneville. Quite a few details remain to be dealt with, but we're looking forward to seeing everyone at the Berrien Springs Meet-before heading on out to Bonneville and seeing what kind of speed we can wring out of the machine!

I'm not an astrologer or a prophet, so I won't attempt to predict the future...but I can truthfully say that we're going to have a great time running the Streamliner, and hope quite a few of you can join us for the fun of it!

We'll see you at the Berrien Springs Meet-and-at Bonneville-October 1st-4th!!

Cheers--Chuk

Re: US Land Steam Record!!

Well-

After Jerry's positive slant on the upcoming runs at Bonneville:

"The acceleration run will begin four miles back. If the pumps keep pumping ,and the piston rods stay connected, and the generator does not melt, then 190 mph will be achieved somewhere between gates. The average speed will be slightly less than 190 mph."

---I felt that I must jump in and give a bit of a progress report!

There are a few details that remain to be done before we hit the salt, but the labor intensive items have mostly been taken care of. One of those items that has been left until now is the intake air scoop for the blower. I'm putting the finishing touches on it now, and getting it ready for sanding and paint. As usual, its design and build has taken longer than projected. The big thing that gripes me about it is the fact that it's adding a bit to our frontal area, but the ram air effect is a necessary evil.

I'm also planning to add some cooling louvers to the engine hatch-otherwise the temp in the closed area around the engine could get out of hand. We've purposefully made the necessary body openings-such as around the boiler exhaust stacks-larger than needed in order to allow for the free flow of air in and out of the closed areas of the body, but I feel that the engine area is going to need a bit of extra cooling.

So-while I'm putting the final touches on the vehicle, the Crew Chief is handling the logistics of moving everything we will need-tools, spares, food, etc, etc. Hopefully, we won't forget anything!

The Berrien Springs Meet begins 3 weeks from now-we'll be there with the Streamliner. I understand that there are a lot of new faces/new ideas/new vehicles going to be there.... It's gonna be a good one-as usual! The World Finals at Bonneville are a little more than a week after the end of the Meet-so plan on joining us for the fun times of both!

Cheers--Chuk

Hi Folks,

Sorry to say, sounds like this is going to be one of those "We'll get 'em next year" evolutions. It wasn't that the steamer wasn't ready to run, it is and will probably be making a run at a local drag race this weekend, it is simply that the Bonneville event has been cancelled due to excess rain and wet salt on the lake bed.

Bonneville

I understand this happens about 1 year out of 5. I'm sure the car and powertrain will be even more refined by next year, so the odds of the record falling will be even better.

Ken

Hi Folks,

As noted above, the Steam Speed America LSR run has been cancelled....along with everything else at Bonneville this October. HOWEVER, Chuk Williams and his team will be running the Ohio Mile this weekend to test out systems and give supporters a chance to see the machine in action. You are all, naturally, invited to come.

Is a mile enough to get up to speed for a reasonable run?
Re: US Land Steam Record!!
September 27, 2013 05:48AM
Hi Rollie,

My information comes at the end of a couple of relatively brief phone calls, they needed to get on the road and there were a lot of other people in the region to contact. There was talk of putting in a lower ratio rear end sprocket to boost acceleration, but I don't know if there is enough time.

>>>DISCLAIMER ALERT<<<

As purely conjecture on my part, and having no direct knowledge of their plans, I'd be surprised if this was anything but the slowest vehicle on the track. The car was meant for Bonneville and acceleration wasn't a consideration even with stepped down gearing. Again, it is just my assumption, but I'd be surprised if Chuk opens it up all the way. It IS Art Gardiner's engine and I don't think he wants to risk breaking it before setting an official record....and I question that they could do so in Ohio. As I said, I'm working on the end of two very short conversations, so I could be entirely wrong.

In any case, the odds of any other steam powered vehicle showing up are minute, so this is the only game in town (OK, out of town) for us steam nuts.

I'll post more info as it becomes available.

Ken

Hey Everyone!

We’re halfway back from the Ohio Mile, sitting at Art Gardiners’ in Cookeville, Tennessee. We’re headed home to Florida after a coupla days here, but I wanted to bring everyone up to speed on our experience at The Ohio Mile.

As I’m sure most everyone knows by now-they cancelled the World Finals at Bonneville because of rain. I called Art to let him know the sad news, and he said “why don’t you check out the Ohio Mile?” Sure enough, they had an Event on the 28th-29th. I called them even though the website said they were sold out-they said “come on down-we’ll fit you in”. We headed on down after calling everyone we could think of that lived close enough to participate without too much travelling. We had quite a crew there from the Club-Scott Haines, Tom Stoecker, Tom Kimmel, Jo Bibby, Nick Mesmer, George Knight, Jason Alford, Tony Grzyb, Dan Greger, Joyce Hoffmaster, Ken Hemmelgarn, Tom Anderson, Don Beck and Robin Roarke.

The organizers were more than accommodating, and everyone else really gave us a lot of positive feedback. There were 175 entries with only one track in use, so the line waiting to run was more than a few hours long! We had a few electronic problems before finally getting to the head of the line, and by then it was 6pm-quitting time! We left the streamliner in line so we could get a run in first thing on Sunday morning. The first run was a disappointment-we only got to 48 mph in the mile-partly because we had been rushed in our starting procedure by the guys at the start line-and partly because of pilot error on my part.

We did a quick turn thru the pit and back in line for our next run. We got to the front around 3pm on Sunday afternoon, and thought we might even get in another run before quitting time if we didn’t have any problems. Alas, it was not to be! After Tom K did the push up to 40 mph, I released the clutch and it just SLIPPED! I kept engaging and disengaging it, trying to get the engine rpm down to a low speed so that the clutch would perhaps hold…but it would not hold the torque. I burned it all the way thru the mile and got up to 65+mph, but I hadn’t packed a spare clutch-so we were done for the Event.

Once again our experience was a learning one, and we found a few more weaknesses to correct before we hit Bonneville for Speed Week in 2014!

Many Thanks to our spectacular crew for their support and hard work!

Cheers—Chuk

Hi EBG!

Hey-Thanks for the heads-up about the Oregonian lake bed-I have never heard of it before. It would be quite a stretch for us to travel that far-but suitable areas/tracks are very hard to find! The photos shown at your link seem to show that the surface is somewhat loose-which-if so-would add a bit of tire drag. Perhaps their vehicle was simply so heavy that it sunk in a bit-probably our 2200 lb streamliner wouldn't sink in so much. I will see if there is more available info on the site.

We took the Streamliner to a car show in Sarasota this past Sunday, and enjoyed it immensely. I think we had more people around our car than any other car there! The show was pretty inclusive, with hot rods, exotics, antiques, and sports cars. There were between 150-200 cars, but only one Steam Streamliner! We had a quite bit of press coverage, including a mention on the local TV station. We met a lot of people who were interested in steam and passed out quite a few SACA Bulletins to prospective members.

Luckily, I have a girlfriend who enjoys these events "almost" as much as I do!

Hi Chuk!

Who says it has to be a dry lake bed? As I recall, Henry Ford set a speed record wayyyy back when in old 666. He did it on Lake St. Claire after if froze. It DID take like 6 months to get the record recognized, folks were arguing that a frozen lake was not LAND. Heck, all we need is a snowplow and some cold weather...more frozen water than you can shake a stick at up here in Michigan!

Ohhh...you might want to bring some tire chains. There's probably a record for the fastest car using those, also.
